Led by Shaye Cohn, Tuba Skinny play Bill Mack's 'Blue'.
'The book 'Tuba Skinny and Shaye Cohn', updated for 2024, written by Pops Coffee, is available from Amazon, both as a paperback and as an eBook. 'Blue' was composed by the Texan country music specialist Bill Mack in 1958. It was difficult to film Tuba Skinny at the dba in Frenchmen Street, New Orleans, when the place was filled with a noisy, jostling crowd. But I did my best. (Maybe it would have been easier if they had played the song in F rather than G!) 8 April 2016.

The book 'Tuba Skinny and Shaye Cohn', updated for 2024, written by Pops Coffee, is available from Amazon, both as a paperback and as an eBook. On 18 April 2015 Tuba Skinny gave a concert at The Dew Drop Hall in Louisiana - the oldest surviving jazz venue in the world. My late friend David Wiseman from England was there and made this video of the band playing Scott Joplin's 'Maple Leaf Rag', co...

The book 'Tuba Skinny and Shaye Cohn', updated for 2024, written by Pops Coffee, is available from Amazon, both as a paperback and as an eBook. A classic rarely played by Tuba Skinny, 'High Society' was composed in 1901 by Porter Steele and Melrose. Jonathan Doyle plays the famous Alphonse Picou solo. Enjoy the cornet-clarinet-trombone 'front line only' chorus. This video comes from the legacy ...

The book 'Tuba Skinny and Shaye Cohn', updated for 2024, written by Pops Coffee, is available from Amazon, both as a paperback and as an eBook. Take a simple 8-bar tune recorded by singer-guitarist Bo Carter (real name Armenter Chatmon) in 1931. Develop it into a 16-bar (8 8) with new words for the great Erika Lewis to sing in a ten-piece Tuba Skinny; and you have a little work of art. Note the...

'Algiers Strut' played by Four Elderly Gents
Просмотров 4126 месяцев назад
This is really 'You're All I Want For Christmas', composed in 1948 by singer-pianist Seger Ellis (1904-1995). Words were added by Glen Moore. However, the great New Orleans trumpeter band-leader Kid Thomas helped to make this tune popular with jazz bands. But he called it 'Algiers Strut' because he was a native of Algiers, the New Orleans parish that is on the west bank of the Mississippi, unli...
'Once in a While' played by Tuba Skinny

Tuba Skinny play the popular tune composed in 1927 by W. H. Butler. Plenty of gems here. Note, for example, the remarkable pattern (inspired by the Louis Armstrong Hot Five recording) sustained by the rhythm section when backing Shaye's solo chorus, from 02:48 to 03:28. Also, like Armstrong, Tuba Skinny play the tune in the key of C, rather than taking the easier option of Bb, as many bands do....

The Shotgun Jazz Band plays the Kid Thomas Classic 'I Believe I Can Make It By Myself'.
Просмотров 4029 месяцев назад
This is a raw, basic 12-bar blues in Bb. Gloriously, Marla plays trumpet and sings a three-chorus vocal. They take it at a tempo that allows space for reflection and counterpoint. The tune was often performed by the Kid Thomas Valentine band back in the 1960s, when drummer Sammy Penn was the singer. A joke within the band was that he would say 'I believe I can make it by myself' when colleagues...
Tuba Skinny with Erika Lewis: 'Six Feet Down'.

One of the lustiest and earliest foot-tappers from the band's repertoire, 'Six Feet Down' was composed by Erika herself, and was on the band’s album of the same name, released in 2010. At that time, Tuba Skinny had no reed player, and Alynda Lee Segarra was on banjo. Robin took a chorus on washboard, just as he does in this video. And they played the tune in the key of G. But in later years, as...

Royal Street, New Orleans. 7 April 2016. 'Memphis Shake' was recorded by Johnny Dodds and The Dixieland Jug Blowers in 1926. The composer was probably Henry Clifford. Tuba Skinny play it here in the key of F and entirely ensemble - i.e., without any solo choruses: 00:07 INTRODUCTION : 4 bars 00:13 THEME A : 16 bars, notable for the diminished F chord on bars 1, 2, 9 and 10 00:36 THEME A : again...

Old age and poor health have prevented me from travelling to NOLA since 2018, so I'm out of touch. But the clubs in Frenchmen Street used to be the best places in the evenings. Many bands, including Tuba Skinny, performed in Royal Street throughout the day.

Be sure to check the band's web page for their schedule before you go. They usually play the d.b.a. on Saturday nights when in New Orleans and have frequent Thursday dates at The Maison, both on Frenchmen Street. They don't list their busking schedule but you may catch them on Royal Street on a Monday, their favorite day to busk. Unfortunately for you they frequently are on tour in September returning to New Orleans in October.

Hi PopsCoffee, Thank you for this old clip. Yes, some flaws, but you portraid the band as good as you could from your position. The band members love having dancers close by, they excel, and Erica comes out clear. Wonder who plays the trombone? We haven't ordered your book yet, will do any day now. Did you explore their European tours 2018, 2019? They seem to do better in France and had some epic moments covered. Their latest settings in Switzerland seem a bit rigig, few seats, no crowding. They need the French response. / Chris@Chris

I have been following Tuba skinny for 12 years and I think Shaye is a wonderful, player, arranger and all round person. However this version of High Society is a disappointment for me. When I compare it with her earlier 5-4-15 street performance, with Thomas Matchiski on clarinet, and the one Ken Colyer delivered in 1972, (both on RUclips), I think she should revert to these versions, with their detinctive banjo backing. I remember listening to Ken live in the early sixties, and these seem to be more akin to the 1923 King Oliver record that I bought at the time.
